Anton Gulin - Lead SDET & Test Automation Consultant

I never planned to become an SDET.

I started in marketing. But somewhere along the way, I realized I cared more about whether the product worked than how we promoted it.

The accidental engineer

That "accident" turned into 10+ years of building test automation frameworks for some of the world's most demanding companies. Apple. Meta. Williams-Sonoma. Blue Cross Blue Shield. Each one taught me something new about what it takes to build quality at scale.

At Apple, I tested for launches that millions of users would experience on day one — including the Apple Card, where over 2 million people signed up in the first week. There's no "we'll fix it in the next release" when the whole world is watching.

At CooperVision, I inherited a team doing 100% manual testing. No framework. No CI/CD. Just spreadsheets and hope. Within months, I built a Playwright/TypeScript framework from scratch that increased automated test coverage by 300% and cut deployment time in half. Two of my manual testers wrote their first automated tests within two months.

My marketing background is my superpower

Most SDETs come from pure engineering backgrounds. I came from marketing — and that's actually my unfair advantage. I don't just care about code coverage metrics. I care about the end user experience.

Every test I write asks the same question: "Will this make the customer's life better?"

That perspective changes everything — from how I prioritize test cases to how I communicate with non-technical stakeholders.

What I believe

  • Quality is everyone's responsibility. The best frameworks make testing accessible to the whole team, not just QA.
  • Shift left, but don't ignore production. Catch bugs early, but also monitor what matters in the real world.
  • Manual testers can become automation engineers. I've seen it happen. The skills are teachable. The mindset is what matters.
  • Flaky tests are worse than no tests. They erode trust and slow everyone down. Fix them or delete them.

Beyond the code

When I'm not building frameworks or hunting down flaky tests, you'll find me exploring the trails of Southern California. Hiking, tent camping under the stars, or planning my next adventure — whether that's a road trip across the US or somewhere overseas.
